Day 5 - Forgiveness as the Cure for Murder in the Heart

Aug 28, 2026

First John 3:14-15 draws the same line Jesus drew in the Sermon on the Mount: hatred toward a brother or sister is not merely a bad attitude. It is a spiritual condition that belongs in the same category as murder. This is not meant to condemn us but to wake us up. The antidote to hatred is not simply the absence of rage. It is the active presence of love. And love, as 1 John makes clear, is not a feeling. It is action. It lays down. It gives. It moves toward the other person. Forgiveness is what kills the seeds of bitterness, contempt, and sinful anger before they can grow into something we cannot take back. And perhaps the most challenging reminder of all: sometimes the person most in need of your forgiveness is the one you see in the mirror every morning.

Reflection Questions:

- Is there hatred or bitterness in your heart that you have been calling something more acceptable?

- Have you withheld forgiveness from yourself over a past failure?

- What is one concrete act of love you can offer today to someone you have been holding at a distance?
