Day 4 - God is Worthy

The Hebrew word shav means emptiness, falsehood, worthlessness. The definition of vain in the Websters Dictionary defines it as empty, worthless, having no substance, value, or importance. Expanding on Exodus 20:7 from day two and three, “You shall not [lift, carry, bear, or take up] the [identity, reputation, character] of the Lord your God in [emptiness, worthlessness, falsehood].” God is commanding us not to attach His name and character to something false, empty, or worthless. Reading the Bible, we can see God’s character and identity is anything but empty and worthless.

Shav describes what is empty, false, or worthless - but Scripture reveals a God who is exactly the opposite. He does not abandon His people (Hebrews 13:5), and the hope we have in Him does not disappoint (Romans 5:5). God's name isn't empty because His character isn't empty. He is faithful to who He says He is.

Knowing God’s character from the Bible, why would people want to carry God’s reputation and character in falsehood? God knows people and their tendencies. The human tendency would be to gain control over a situation or people so why not use God’s almighty name to gain that control?

Spend some time today diving into Scripture revealing God’s character. How can knowing who He truly is help you trust Him rather than trying to use His name to control an outcome?
