The Purpose of Discipline

Mar 29, 2026    Pastor William Parsons

Pastor Will invites us to wrestle with one of the most challenging yet transformative aspects of our faith journey: divine discipline. Drawing from Hebrews 12, we're reminded that God's correction in our lives isn't punitive—it's restorative. Like a loving father who disciplines his children not out of anger but out of deep care for their future, God allows painful seasons to redirect us back to the path of holiness. Pastor Will explores three profound purposes of discipline: it makes us holy by separating us from worldly patterns, it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness as we learn to live rightly before God, and it brings healing to our weak hands and feeble knees so we can continue running the race of faith. We're challenged to see that life will be hard regardless—but we get to choose our hard. Will we endure the discipline that leads to eternal life, or will we be like Esau, trading our spiritual birthright for temporary earthly comfort? The contrast is stark: those who endure discipline grow into mature, fruitful disciples who help others find Christ, while those who reject it spiral into bitterness, taking others down with them. This Holy Week especially, as we prepare our hearts for Easter, we're called to embrace God's loving correction, knowing that every painful pruning is meant to produce a greater harvest and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.
